Midstream Activities

An Overview

Midstream ActivitiesMidstream activities is primarily concerned with the transportation of oil and natural gas from the extraction site to the refineries. The activity includes treatment of crude oil in order to remove impurities such as water vapor or hydrogen sulfide. Removing impurities and compressing the fluids helps maximize the amount of oil and natural gas that can be transported.

The midstream activity play a major role part in getting the crude oil and natural gas to the refineries and to the end consumers. Once the petroleum has been through the midstream sector and transported to the refineries, it undergoes last transformation before it is ready to be sold on the market. The crude oil is refined into gasoline and many other petroleum products. The crude oil in the refineries is processed to obtain the following products of daily use:

  • Petroleum gas - Petroleum gas is used for heating, cooking and making plastics.
  • Naphtha -It is the intermediate that will be further processed to make gasoline.
  • Gasoline - Used as fuel in most motor vehicles.
  • Kerosene - Fuel for jet engines and tractors; starting material for making other products Gas oil.
  • Diesel distillate - Used for diesel fuel and heating oil; starting material for making other products
  • Lubricating oil - Used for motor oil, grease, other lubricants
  • Heavy gas or Fuel oil - Used for industrial fuel; starting material for making other products
  • Residuals (coke, asphalt, tar, waxes) - starting material for making other products.

Career Opportunities

The Jobs in midstream sector include working for companies that transport oil and natural gas from the drilling sites to the refinery and then on to the consumers in the population centers. It involves the expertise of various professional such as HSE Manager, Operations Technologist, Refinery Designs Engineer, Chemical Engineers, Petroleum engineer and others.

The introduction of technological advances in the midstream sector has made the process a much more efficient. Hence, the sector demands qualified professionals with specialization in pipe line transportation, refineries, storage etc.
